So I can't go overseas. But this conference (3rd International Evidence Based Librarianship Conference) actually seems relevant. So maybe I can try to meet a few people there? Brisbane, October?
Now, maybe I'll have some time to catch up on reporting on the Librarians in the Pub series, run by the ALIA mentoring branch but basically, it seems, a way for library-types to get together and gossip about stuff. And, as I'm fond of saying, I'm excruciating at networking that doesn't involve CAT5, so I went along. (And also I knew Fiona of Blisspix and occasonally Morgan of Exploded Librarian turned up, and I'm less scared of people if I know something about them first. Look, I'm not called Infoaddict for nowt here!).
So there was the lovely John displaying "The River Cottage Meat Book" (John works at the Meat Industry Library) which caused increasing drooling as the night went on (cider and pork chops just _match_, don't'cha'know??), a trivia night to which we could get all the answers right but not actually join in (Lake Eyre is only the biggest lake in Australia 4 times a century, you know!!), and new people to meet which was made much less scary by cider and atmosphere. And we found out more about meat industry library queries than maybe any sensible human should know. ((Who am I kidding - I'm in the health/medical library area. Heh). And no John, I don't think asking people if they're vegetarian before they join can be counted as discrimination!! Can't do much about those who become vegetarian afterwards ...
And I got to meat (sic - I'll leave that typo in for now :) ) Fiona #1. As Gillian-my-manager here mentioned beforehand: "scary - you're meeting another blogging fiona you found on the internet. scaaaary."
Scary? It was COOL. :) Must do it again. Mind you, I can't remember anyone else's names now ... This is typical. If I had your email addresses I'd be fine ... next time I'll take a camera. Or use my eeevil cameraphone.
cameraphones are simply wrong :P I must make it to another pub meat one of these days.
